Resources for Families
All resources found on this page are simply to provide a point of contact or direction towards greater insights from more qualified individuals. Emily is not responsible for, affiliated with, nor actively vetting any of the following websites, resources, or professionals. It is the responsibility of your family to vet and choose what resources and tools are the most appropriate fit for your family or organization and their needs.
"We are the lifelong guide for those who learn and think differently. In the past year, we’ve helped more than 20 million people discover their potentials, take control of their lives, and stay on positive paths." This amazing website has tons of free resources for families and educators. I have found their handouts on specific learning disabilities and IEP guides to be the most helpful.
The team at Wrightslaw covers everything from special education caselaw and legal updates to advocacy trainings and a yellow pages for kids. The website tells the story of it's beginnings as, "Pete [Wright] was swamped with calls and letters requesting advice about special education rights and responsibilities. [H]e needed to find or create a more efficient way to educate parents, teachers, and advocates about these issues."
Formerly known as Good Shepherd and Bethesda Lutheran Communities, AbleLight offers support for adults with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities through group home living, in home services, caregiving support, and faith resources. They "offer a variety of materials for all ages, yet written at a level of understanding for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, so they can be fully included in their congregations and faith activities." AbleLight is located across the country and around the globe but currently has 11 group homes in South Orange County, that Emily regularly supports through monthly Bible Studies and special events.
Texas Christian University is home to the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development and the Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI®) training hub. "TBRI® is an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. TBRI® uses Empowering Principles to address physical needs, Connecting Principles for attachment needs, and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors. While the intervention is based on years of attachment, sensory processing, and neuroscience research, the heartbeat of TBRI® is connection." Their camps, trainings, and degree programs equip families and practitioners globally to meet the needs of not only kids from hard places, but all kids.
ACEs Too High "is a nonpartisan traditional online news site that reports on research about positive and adverse childhood experiences, including developments in epidemiology, neurobiology, and the biomedical and epigenetic consequences of toxic stress. We also cover how people, organizations, agencies and communities are implementing practices and policies based on the research. This includes developments in education, juvenile justice, criminal justice, public health, medicine, mental health, social services, and cities, counties and states." Emily is always happy to offer presentations and training on the ACEs curriculum and to further discuss the impacts recognized in the Kaiser-Permanente study.
This website contains the most up-to-date resources, research, and tools for families in California and with links to national affiliates with updates for other states. They "strive to raise dyslexia awareness, empower families to support their children, and improve resources for students with dyslexia in California public schools."

Bringing accessible resources to all families is a personal passion project for Emily. After hearing from friends teaching and raising kids in both resource abundant and resource scarce communities, Emily developed a passion with researching all of the opportunities for growth available to families, virtually, in their local areas, and in their own homes. If you are in search of a specific resource or tool, please feel free to reach out and Emily will be glad to try and connect you with some options that you can evaluate to see if they best meet your needs.
